Football: Bath City FC: It was the late, late show as Dan Hayfield grabbed an equaliser away at Havant and Waterlooville to deny the relegation threatened outfit a win – but salvaged a point as the Romans keep their promotion push on track. Writing on social media about the 1-1 draw the fans were positive. One wrote: “Take what we can boys. Great battling characters to keep going and get a point!! Havant fighting for their lives and top teams have lost there this year.” Another added: “Yeovil lost here, Chelmsford lost here, Maidstone lost here, city didn’t, so that’s pretty good.” While a third fan penned: “No such thing as an easy game in NLS this season!”
Next up is Braintree on Tuesday who are one point behind Bath – but Braintree have game in hand. Bath sits in 4th place in the league on 57 points meaning it’s must-win game if promotion remains on the agenda. What Bath need is for Worthing and Chelmsford who are on 62 and 63 points respectively to slip up in the run in to the business end of the season. Yeovil look set to return to the National League automatically with 75 points.
Rugby: Bath Rugby Union Club: Finn Russell’s cross pitch kick to South African Van der Merke who ran in to put Scotland further ahead with a hat-trick try and helped to seal victory over England. England featured Bath’s Ollie Lawrence and Sam Underhill in the Calcutta Cup fixture. The magician was son form for the dark blues as he kicked conversions and a penalty and at times orchestrated the game to the frustration of England. Van der Merke qualifies for Scotland having lived and played north of the border for more than three years.
It’s eyes down for the next home game in the Gallagher Premiership against Sale Sharks on Sunday 24th March when the BB&Ws will seek to grab maximum points and retain a healthy position in the league.
Team Bath Netball: The Blue and Golds came down to earth with a bump following their opening win – this second match on the road at Loughborough saw them beaten 83-46. In what the club described as a tough game against the reigning champions Loughborough Lightening but it featured a full squad with a debut for Emma Barrie.
In the opening match of the season the ‘Long Bomb Queen’ Super Sophie Kelly was named Player of the Match as the Blue and Golds won their opening game of the season against The Strathclyde Sirens by 49-53 in the away fixture at the Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham

Team Bath Swimming: University of Bath sporting scholar Leah Crisp says she is “over the moon” after securing a Paris 2024 Olympic Games quota place for Team GB in marathon swimming. She finished 17th overall in the women’s 10km race at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha to earn Britain one of the 13 quota spots still available for this summer.
“I got to the last lap and thought, ‘everything I’ve got left, let’s use it and see what I can do’,” said Crisp, “I got a bit stuck around the second buoy on the last lap and lost a few places, so I just had to absolutely go for it down the final kilometre. It was quite stressful, really hard and everyone was just really gunning for it but I obviously managed to pull it back enough.”
Team GB’s Olympic swimming squad will be confirmed later in the year, with the women’s marathon swimming race taking place in the Seine River in central Paris on Saturday 8th August. There are four main teams – with two elevens of the Bath Wanderers Women sides and an U19’s XI as well. Plus, there are teams for girls from U10s to U15s, and youth cricket for the same ages – to join or for more info visit the website. The men’s first team play in the West of England Premier Cricket League (WEPL), the ECB National Club Championship, the ECB T20 competition and the Somerset Cup.

Cricket: Bear Flat Cricket Club. Established in 1982, the Bears are in Division 1 of the Wiltshire County Cricket League (WCCL) on Saturdays, with a home ground at The Glasshouse Academy, Bradford Road, Combe Down, Bath; there’s also games in Division 7 Blue of the Somerset Monmouth League on Saturdays, home ground the Ken Willcox Ground, Peasedown St John, Bath; and friendlies against clubs based in Somerset/Wiltshire on Sundays; and T20 games against clubs based in Somerset/Wiltshire midweek; plus they participation in the Somerset Knock Out cup.

Cricket: Hampset Cricket Club: based at Bloomfield Rise, Odd Down, Bath, the club was founded in 1940 and features a large number of elevens including the Scholars, development XI, midweek Saturday and Sunday elevens, junior teams from under 9s to u13s and indoor squads. Modern Pentathlon: Team GB had an incredible performance at the home World Championships held at the University of Bath, with a seven-strong squad qualifying across the women’s and men’s finals.

Rugby: Bath Rugby Union Club Men

The Blue, Black and Whites are in the Champions Cup pool stages in 2023/24. Taking place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the home of next year’s final, Sarra Elgan and Vincent Pochulu announced Bath Rugby’s fate for their European campaign. Being drawn in Pool 2, Bath Rugby will take on two French teams in the form of Top14 Champions, Stade Toulousain, along with Racing 92 and the URC’s Cardiff Rugby and Ulster Rugby. Bath Rugby have also drawn Harlequins, however under the Champions Cup’s new format, teams within the same league drawn into the same pool will not play each other.
Within the new format, the Champions Cup sees four pools of six teams, totalling 24 teams. The teams are split into two tiers; the four winning teams from the 2022/23 leagues (Munster, La Rochelle, Stade Toulousain and Saracens) make up Tier 1, with the remaining 20 qualifying teams placed into Tier 2. In a club first, the Blue, Black and White will take on Racing 92 who finished fifth in the Top14, giving new signing Finn Russell the chance to front up against his former French side.
Recent Top14 winners, Stade Toulousain, may also get the chance to visit The Rec, giving Bath a shot at redemption after a narrow 20-22 defeat the last time the French champions were in town in 2018.
Cardiff Rugby, who picked up the Welsh Shield for 2022/23, were handed a 38-3 hammering in 2016 and will look for retaliation come the pool stages.
Northern Ireland-based outfit Ulster Rugby, who were knocked out in this year’s URC 2022/23 quarter finals, complete Bath Rugby’s Pool fixtures for 2023/24.

Swimming: Dolphins: Based at Bath Leisure Centre and established in 1899, Bath Dolphin Swimming Club (BDSC) is one of the oldest swimming clubs in the South West Region. They provide competitive swimming opportunities for young swimmers through to a masters swimming group.
