By Harry Mottram: It appears that once again opinion polls have failed to predict the outcome of an election with many pollsters either suggesting a dead heat in the USA election or a narrow win for either Trump or Harris. In a surprise to many the Republican Party (often call the GOP or Grand Old Party), has won the popular vote and the Electoral College system of voting. It means that Donald Trump becomes the 47th President with a mandate to implement his policies which may or may not affect this country and Bath in particular.
The city’s MP Wera Hobhouse of the Liberal Democrat Party who won her own election in July to represent Bath in the House of Commons has reacted to the news from America.
In a post on X – formerly Twitter – on Wednesday 6th November 2024, the day after the USA election she wrote: “Today is not a day to be dejected but to understand that standing up for civil rights, for inclusion and compassionate politics continues to be a battle. This is the time for Liberals everywhere to not give up and fight for our values.”
She also added: “Fixing the UK’s broken relationship with the EU is even more urgent than before. We must strengthen trade and defence cooperation across Europe to help protect ourselves from the damage Trump will do.”
The Prime Minister Keir Starmer congratulated the president elect writing on social media: “As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.”
