Bath Voice News: Tilly is tops! Widcombe schoolgirl wins Christmas Card competition and meets the city’s MP and is presented with a prize at the junior school by Head of School Aaron Harley

From the Liberal Democrat MP for Bath Wera Hobhouse: On Thursday, December 12th, Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, joined the festive celebrations at Bath’s world-renowned Christmas Market before attending the Widcombe Junior School Christmas production to award the winner of her 2024 Christmas Card Competition.

This year’s Christmas card competition, themed ‘Festive Fun in Bath’, received many creative entries from local schoolchildren. Tilly Davey aged 9, from Widcombe Junior School was selected as the winner for her vibrant card  that captured the joy and spirit of Bath at Christmas time.  The design features on Wera’s official Christmas card, sent to friends, colleagues, and supporters across the country. Congratulations were also given to two runners-up in recognition of their imaginative creations.

Wera attended Widcombe Junior School’s festive play as a special guest, where she was warmly welcomed by students and staff. After enjoying the performance, Wera joined Head of School Mr. Harley to present Tilly with her award and a small gift by way of congratulations on her success.

Earlier in the day, Wera had visited the Bath Christmas Market to explore its twinkling chalets, meet local traders, and celebrate their commitment to sustainability and community support. With over 200 stalls showcasing unique crafts, gifts, and food, the market continues to highlight sustainability initiatives, including the use of vegetable oil-powered generators to reduce carbon emissions and efforts to minimise single-use plastics.

Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, commented:
“I was delighted to present Tilly with her award and a small gift to celebrate her achievement. Her design was vibrant, full of festive cheer, and beautifully captured the magic of Bath at Christmas. I want to thank all the children who entered the competition- it was wonderful to see so much young talent on display.

“The Bath Christmas Market is a festive highlight for our city, bringing residents and visitors together while showcasing the best of local talent and craftmanship. It’s also heartwarming to see the market’s dedication to supporting charities, schools, and community groups, as well as its leadership in sustainability.

“It’s no surprise Bath Christmas Market has recently been named one of the best in the UK. It’s a celebration of everything that makes Bath special, and the estimated £47 million boost to our local economy last year is a huge achievement.”
