Bath Voice News: Moorland Road to lose its Morrisons as grocer closes stores across the country

By Harry Mottram: The Morrisons Daily store at the end of Moorland Road is set to close as the supermarket giant slashes costs by closing 17 stores and 52 cafes as it seeks to cut its debt mountain of around £3bn. Also set to close is the Post Office in the shop meaning the nearest post office counters are in Twerton and Southdown. It leaves a gap in the street which is known for its mix of independent shops and businesses.

The CEO of Morrisons Rami Baitieh told the Retail Gazette: “The changes we are announcing today are a necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons and enable us to focus our investment into the areas that customers really value and that can play a full part in our growth. Morrisons Cafés are rightly famous for their great quality well-priced food, their place in the local community and their appealing mix of traditional favourites alongside exciting new dishes. In most locations the Morrisons Café has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option.”

That statement will come as no comfort to those who rely on the store in Moorland Road or the staff who the firm say they will try to relocate but nationally there are a total of 365 workers who could potentially be out of a job. Bath Voice understands the closures will take place in April.
