By Lynne Passfield: Bath Voice was early to spread the word that Bath Croquet Club was to launch an U18 Academy earlier in 2025. Following a successful Easter Holiday activity week at the club, a group of U18s began training each Monday evening with the aim of entering the Croquet England National Schools’/Clubs’ championship to be held over the weekend of 21st/22nd June at Nottingham.
Bath entered three doubles teams into the Saturday Clubs’ championship and the pairing of Luis Zarate and Teddy Sherwood won three of their four games. Hanna Laganowska Black and Liliana Zarate and Hector Croisdale-Appleby and Florence Coombs each won two games. These results were tremendous considering the students had only been playing for three months.

In the Sunday competition the Academy entered singles by age in U18s and U14s groupings and again our students played with drive. Liliana Zarate came top of her U14 block and whilst she was unable to overpower her opponent in the final block playoff, gave a creditable performance. Hanna won two games in her block but lost to the eventual U14s winner.

The under U18s entrants from Bath came up against Declan MacPhee (Nottingham club) who had just returned from Florida where he represented England in the U21 event. However, Luis, Hector and Florence focused on further displaying their skills against such formidable opposition and gave yet more creditable performances.
With such potential the Academy coaches are already making plans for further training and tournament entries.
