Theatre Picks in Bath

Mission Theatre
Wed 16-Sat 19 Jul. The Mother. Next Stage Company stage Florian Zeller’s psychological drama that revolves around the complex and intense emotions of a mother, whose life has been upended by the perceived behaviour of her husband and grown-up son. Suspecting her husband of having an affair and feeling neglected by her son, Anne struggles with her increasing isolation and jealousy.

Rondo Theatre
Sat 5 Jul. Struggle, Bubble and Squeak. 8pm. Blending storytelling and stand-up, past and present collide in this tale of high jinks and resistance with Victoria Melody. Directed by Mark Thomas, this celebrates the ordinary people still shaping history.

Theatre Royal Bath Main House
Fri 27 Jun-Sat 19 Jul. Grace Pervades. David Hare’s drama tells the extraordinary story of Henry Irving (Ralph Fiennes) and Ellen Terry (Miranda Raison), the greatest stars of the Victorian stage, and Ellen’s troubled and brilliant children – Edith Craig and Edward Gordon Craig – who made their own profound contribution to the development of British theatre.

Egg Theatre
Tue-Wed, 22-23 Aug. A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Performed by Theatre Royal Bath Summer School. Shakespeare’s high comedy set in a wood near Athens.

Ustinov Studio

Mon 1-Wed 3 Jul. Bonding. Cyril Blake is Stephen – a wannabe James Bond in this investigation into the world of 007.

Mon 7-Thu 10 Jul. Love You, Bye. Colly, Kaia, Mercy, and Theo have shared over a decade of life’s highs and lows: promotions, break-ups, illness, and recovery. They understand the quiet strength of true love – platonic and romantic – and the profound impact of having people who believe in you without question. In a world that often feels unkind, they are each other’s constant, proving that sometimes, friends are the family you choose. When a woman close to them goes missing, the group is forced to confront an unflinching reality: survival isn’t guaranteed in a world steeped in violence against women and girls.

Fri 25 Jul-Sat 23 Aug. Hedda. Adapted and directed by Matthew Dunster. Lily Allen will star as the enigmatic and destructive Hedda Gabler, one of theatre’s most irresistible heroines, in a thrilling new version of Ibsen’s masterpiece.

Bristol Old Vic Theatre

Thu 19 Jun -Sat 12 Jul. How To Win Against History. Bristol Old Vic and Francesca Moody Production. A riches-to-rags story in a hilarious, ripped-up musical. The 5th Marquess of Anglesey blew his family’s colossal fortune on diamond frocks, lilac-dyed poodles and putting on simply amazing plays – to which nobody came – causing a very Edwardian scandal. His fabulous flame burned brightly, briefly and extremely cross-dressingly until he died at just 29, after which his outraged family destroyed every record of him ever having had existed. Now Henry’s back to tell his regrettable cautionary tale, with nothing to his name but savage wit, banging belters and a metric tonne of sparkle.

Tobacco Factory, Bristol.

The Crucibitch. (Version of the Crucible) Thu 3-sat 5 Jul. In the small, puritanical community of Salem, Massachusetts, cracks are beginning to show. The teenage girls keep vanishing into the woods, John Proctor is skipping holy communion, and a peculiar goat lingers behind the church. Arthur Miller’s play inspired into a tacky, sweaty remix of an American classic, in a non-stop sugar rush of pop confessional, historical revisionism, and religious hysteria. Welcome to Salem.
