Dear Editor, Nana is one of many cats and dogs Rescue centres are reporting record numbers of abandoned cats and dogs this winter, many arriving with severe behavioural issues. Bath Cats and Dogs Home warns that over 70% of dogs and 50% of cats in its care now require specialist behavioural support to overcome anxiety and stress.
The charity, which rehabilitates more than 700 animals annually, says frightened and under-socialised pets are flooding its facilities. “Too many rescue animals are struggling with stress and anxiety,” said Nicola Charman, Training and Behaviour Manager. “They can’t tell us their history, so our team uses all its expertise to rebuild their confidence. We’re here to pick up the pieces, but we need help to continue our work.”
This year we’ve seen more cats and dogs arrive with complex behavioural challenges that require longer rehabilitation. Without thorough socialisation as puppies or kittens, these animals become easily overwhelmed by unfamiliar people, places, sights and sounds. Your support will help them heal and prepare them for their forever homes.
To meet this growing need, Bath Cats and Dogs Home is appealing for donations during The Big Give Christmas Challenge (2–9 December) at https://shorturl.at/XEarZ. Every contribution made through the campaign website will be doubled, providing vital funds for animal behaviour training and ongoing care.
One success story is Nana, an abandoned French Bulldog found terrified under a car early this year. Initially, too frightened to walk or eat, Nana was slowly rehabilitated by the charity’s behaviour team. Today, she is playful, affectionate, confident with other dogs and ready for a new home.
We are an independent registered charity, Bath Cats and Dogs Home believe every cat and dog should enjoy a healthy life and a happy home. Through advice and support in our local community, to rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming at our centre in Claverton, Bath, we positively transform the lives of over 700 pets each year.
