Dear Editor, The Four Week Scout Challenge gives young people aged 4–25 the chance to grow, make friends, and gain new experiences that build confidence and practical skills. Volunteers make that possible, and the Four Week Challenge is an easy way to try it out and see whether supporting young people is something you’d enjoy.

What the challenge involves:
– Week 1 — See what we do
Visit a session, meet the team, and get a feel for how Scouts helps young people learn and have fun.
– Week 2 — Start to help out
Join in with simple tasks and support leaders as they run activities.
– Week 3 — Get a little more involved
Take on small responsibilities, help plan an activity, or support a group during a game or craft.
– Week 4 — Decide if Scouting is for you

By now you’ll know whether the role, the team, and the energy of the group feel like a good fit.
Ways you can make a difference:
Supporting young people doesn’t always mean leading a section — though you can, whether with Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Explorers. Many adults help in other ways that are just as valuable:
– Trustees and committee roles — ideal if you have experience in planning, finance, governance, or project work.
– Skills-based support — from maintenance to communications to event planning.
– Flexible helpers — perfect if you’re semi‑retired, retired, or simply have a few hours to spare.
Scouting welcomes adults of all ages and backgrounds, and you don’t need any previous experience. Training, guidance, and a supportive team help you learn as you go.

Why try it?
Volunteering with Scouts helps young people gain skills for life while giving adults a sense of purpose, connection, and community. Many volunteers say they get as much out of it as the young people do.
