Bear Flat Cricket Club Women’s Team News: The Bear Flat Cricket Club makes history!
It all started over a conversation on the boundary at one of the Saturday morning All Stars sessions. I was in conversation with one of the mums, discussing how successful our youth cricket programme was, and continued to be, saying, “All we need now is a women’s team. Still, it is in our development plan.”
“That sounds fun, I would be interested in that.”
Canvassing opinion around the group proved she was not alone. The main response was, “I’ve never done it but I’m willing to give it a go.” So spurred on, conversations were held, plans were considered, and in true Bear Flat tradition, the general consensus among the management team was: let’s give it a try and see what happens.
From those seeds of enthusiasm, Bear Flat set about breaking new ground. Interest blossomed, and the energy was soon translated into real action. Coaches identified, winter nets organised and well supported, friendlies arranged, and festivals signed up for.
Players began the 2026 season to meet for informal training, sharing laughs and learning the basics together. The sense of camaraderie grew, not just among the women, but throughout the club as everyone rallied behind the new initiative.
Last Tuesday, the Bear Flat Women’s team took to the outfield in their first competitive game against Bathford. The hosting was very welcoming and supportive, and judging by the smiles, enjoyed by all.
The Bears have made remarkable progress in the last five years, creating a youth programme with All Stars fully booked each year, and two teams of Bear Cubs, under 11s and under 13s competing, with a developmental pathway in place to move from junior to senior cricket.
If you are interested in joining our women’s team, training is held on Friday evenings from 1800-1900 at The Glasshouse Playing fields. Everyone is welcome, irrespective of ability.
With the women now competing under the Bears banner, we continue to grow and go from strength to strength. #COYB.

More on Women’s Cricket
Women’s Cricket in England and Wales can be dated to the mid 18th century by which time the men’s game was becoming established mainly in the south of England. By the late 19th century women only cricket clubs were being formed with regular friendlies between rival villages, colleges and schools. Unlike football the sport was not banned by the equivalent of the FA as the sport didn’t have the same prejudice that affected contact sports like football – and a separate Women’s Cricket Association took on the administration in the 1920s – with other associations for different countries. The first world cup in 1973 saw the game enter the modern era as the media began to take an interest and the Women’s Cricket Association merged with the England and Wales Cricket Board in the late 1990s – now fully integrated with the men’s game.
Bath Cricket Club has a women’s team in the Bath Wanderers as well as several girls’ teams including one for the under nines who play the soft ball version. The University of Bath Cricket Club have a women’s team who play a mix of friendlies and competitive games. Lansdown CC also have teams for women and girls, as do Bathford Cricket Club amongst other local clubs.

This summer the latest world cup takes place with some matches nearby in Bristol. England are one of the favourites along with their traditional opponents from the West Indies, Australia, India and South Africa – but Scotland and Ireland are also in the competition so an interesting contest is assured.
