Bath Voice News: sadness as the former mayor of Bath Rob Appleyard dies – the one time welder and salesman moved from Essex as a youth and after elections became Bath’s first citizen

By Harry Mottram: The former Mayor of Bath and Liberal Democrat councillor Rob Appleyard for Westfield has died.
Cllr Rob Appleyard served as a Bath & North East Somerset councillor from 2007 to 2023 and was Chair of Council in 2012/13.
He served first as a councillor for Westfield and then for Lambridge. He was Mayor of Bath in 2022/23 and was also made an Honorary Alderman in 2023.
The former mayor served as cabinet member for Adult Services 2019-21, and on a wide range of other bodies including the Planning and Licensing Committees and the Avon Pension Fund.
Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of the Council said: “With great sadness we are flying the City of Bath Arms at half-mast above the Guildhall as a civic tribute to of Ex-Mayor Honorary Alderman Rob Appleyard who has passed away. Our thoughts and condolences go to Rob’s family and friends. He will be greatly missed. A minute’s silence to pay respects will be held at the Council Meeting on 21st November.”

Speaking to Bath Voice in 2022 Rob said: ““I’m an Essex boy, born in Clacton and grew up in a place called Burnham-on-Crouch known for its sailing.”
He moved several times and finally lived in Woodford Green when as a 20 year old he had the choice of moving to Thetford or Weston-super-Mare. After talking to my brother who had lived in Weston at one time I chose the town as there were lots of young people and a vibrant music scene and I was in my 20s so I wanted to meet other young people. When I moved there I was working as a welder before moving into retail and finally corporate sales for BT,” he said.
Rob is survived by his four children and his wife Amanda.
