Bath Voice News: A city remembers. Report on Remembrance Sunday and the role of the cadet forces as opportunities for young people to gain confidence and the qualities of good citizenship

By Mark Shelford: This weekend, the city of Bath came together in solemn remembrance to honour those who gave their lives in service to our nation.

The day began at the War Memorial beside Victoria Park, where veterans, serving personnel, cadets, civic leaders, and residents gathered to lay wreaths in quiet reflection. Later, a parade led by the magnificent Downside CCF Band and Pipes and Drums  made its way through the city to the Guildhall — a powerful reminder of Bath’s enduring respect for the Armed Forces and all who serve.

The salute was taken by the Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mohammed Saddiq, His Majesty’s representative in the county. Accompanying him was his Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet, Leading Cadet Natalie Wilson from Yeovil Sea Cadets — one of Somerset’s outstanding young ambassadors.

The Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet: The Best of the Best

Each year, a small number of exceptional cadets are appointed as Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets. These young people represent the very best of the county’s cadet forces — disciplined, dedicated, and active in their local communities.

Their role is both ceremonial and symbolic: assisting the Lord-Lieutenant at civic events, remembrance services, and royal visits, while embodying the values of leadership, teamwork, and public service. Leading Cadet Wilson exemplifies the qualities the cadet movement instils — confidence, integrity, and commitment — the foundations of strong communities and good citizenship.

Cadets: Building Confidence, Skills, and Futures

Across Somerset, cadet forces — Army, Sea, Air, and Combined — offer far more than uniformed training. They provide young people with structure, challenge, and a sense of belonging.

Research by Professor Simon Denny, University of Northampton, into the social impact of cadet forces found that cadet membership boosts confidence, educational attainment, and social mobility. In his words:

“The positive impacts on social mobility are frankly amazing.”

Through adventure training, volunteering, and skill development, cadets gain nationally recognised qualifications and life experiences that prepare them for success — all while making lasting friendships and serving their communities.
