Theatre preview: The Father plays at The Mission Theatre this week

The Father by Florian Zeller translated by Christopher Hampton

  • Wednesday, January 25, 20237:30 PM  to Saturday, January 28, 20237:30 PM

The Father is a tragi-comic mystery, a sobering and realistic family story, and an unsentimental, emotionally intense look at the world through the eyes of a man experiencing dementia.

The Father makes us see things as if through the confused eyes of Andre, as he struggles to make sense of a progressively befuddling world. Sound grim? It’s not. Instead it is an astonishingly unguarded play about the cruelties of love and the limits of patience, and the way child-parent relationships become inverted as old age creeps up and mugs us.

Funny and poignant in equal measure, no one watching this production can fail to be moved. Directed in-the-round by Next Stage’s Artistic Director, Ann Ellison, with the role of the Father played by talented Next Stager, John Matthews.

At each performance of The Father, Next Stage will be raising money for the Bath-based charity RICE – Research Institute for the Care of Older People
