Bath Theatre Preview: The Rondo Theatre Company stage ‘the battle of the siblings’ dark comedy The Memory of Water to the stage this week

By Harry Mottram: I’ve seen two productions of Shelagh Stephenson’s dark comedy, ‘The Memory of Water’ and I am always stunned by the brilliant portrayal of siblings arguing over their memories of their mother. I’m sure the Rondo will do this family drama – and extremely funny comedy – justice – definitely one to catch.

It was first staged at the Hampstead Theatre in 1996. Three sisters; Teresa, Mary and Catherine, come together before their mother’s funeral, each haunted by their own demons. The play focuses on how each sister deals with the death and how it directly affects them. The three each have different memories of the same events, causing constant bickering about whose memories are true. As the three women get together after years of separation, all their hidden lies and self-betrayals are about to reach the surface

Shelagh Stephenson’s dark comedy, ‘The Memory of Water’, to the Rondo Theatre Bath runs from Wednesday 22 to Saturday 25 March, 2023
