Bath Voice News: recycling and dustbin news over the Christmas period

By John Wimperis, Local democracy Reporter: Major changes to rubbish and recycling collections will affect thousands in Bath and North East Somerset across the Christmas period.

Bath and North East Somerset Council’s recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and collection crews will not be out on those days. Garden waste collections will be also be suspended until January 15.

Refuse and recycling collections between December 25 and January 12 will instead happen one to three days later than usual. You can check your collection dates and download a list of the changed dates here: www.bathnes.gov.uk/collectionday

Local hospice Dorothy House will be collecting Christmas trees for a donation, which can be booked here: https://just-helping.org.uk/register-tree

Alternatively, they can be taken to the council’s recycling centres or booked in advance for collection by the council. All decorations should be removed and the tree cut in half to be less than 1.2m tall. You can book a council collection here: https://beta.bathnes.gov.uk/christmas-tree-collections

Tim Ball, the council’s cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: “Our crews work hard all year round, but Christmas and New Year is especially busy as they cope with the increased amount of rubbish and recycling – particularly food waste – that they need to collect. Please remember we collect more than 13 different items for recycling from weekly green box collections.

“To help the crews collect quickly, keep their vehicle moving and to reduce traffic congestion in your road, please wash, squash and sort the materials before you put them in your green boxes. We have posted leaflets to every household with the changes to the recycling and rubbish collection and you can also easily find the information for your postcode on our website.”

The new reuse shop at Keynsham recycling centre will also be closed over the Christmas week.
