Cricket: Bath Cricket Club: Cricket fans will note the first-class season – featuring Somerset – begins on the 5th of April while for Bath CC the first team play their first fixture on May 4. Check out the club of news of walking cricket and also teams for disabled players as well as junior teams along with many social events.
Football: Bath City Women FC: Bath City Women take on Frome Town Women FC at Badgers Hill on Sunday 18th February with a 2pm kick off in this league crunch fixture.
Football: Bath City FC: The Romans are out of the Somerset Premier Cup after the game at Twerton Park ended with a penalty shoot out against Weston-super-Mare. The seasiders won 5-6 on penalties after the game finished 0-0 on 90 minutes – main photo from the club.
The club gave this report: “Both sides fielding strong starting XIs but struggled to create clear-cut opening, particularly during a low-key first half. City’s best chance of the half came on 20 minutes when Richard Chin’s cross found Scott Wilson but his shot was well blocked by Humphries. Shortly afterwards the visitors won a free-kick around 25 yards out but Grubb sent his effort high over the goal which rather summed up the opening 45 minutes.
“An early shot across the face of the goal by Grubb hinted at an improved second half but it wasn’t until the closing stages that either side began to threaten to break the deadlock. On 78 minutes a hanging cross from Joe Raynes saw James Alabi rise above his marker but his header flew narrowly over the bar. Seven minutes later Weston came the closest to scoring all evening when Humphries header flicked the outside of the post. A couple more half chances for both sides came and went before the final whistle signalled a second penalty shoot-out for City in 2024.
“Unfortunately, the outcome was the same as the FA Trophy exit against Coalville Town. City’s first five penalties were all successful as Cody Cooke, Chris Lines, Ewan Clark, Danny Greenslade and Alabi all beat ex-City keeper Max Harris. However, Weston were equally clinical through Grubb, Humphries, Mannings, Soule and Thomas. This took the shoot-out to sudden death and Jack Batten saw his effort saved by Harris. And although Josey Casa-Grande got a hand to Dodd’s effort he couldn’t keep it to end City’s interest in the competition for another year.”
Malaysian International Richard Chin has joined the Romans from Charlton Athletic until the end of the season. The club said: “A versatile wide player, Chin has experience in both the EFL and VNLS, as well as recently representing Malaysia at U23s level.” The new player already has a nick name – Chinny. Meanwhile Oscar Thorn has departed the club following the expiration of his loan.
Next game is a home league match against St Albans on the 17th February in what is billed as the battle of the Roman cities – as St Albans was known as Verulamium and was the second largest city after London or Londinium in CE50. St Albans are just two points above Bath – but Bath has two games in hand – and both teams are in the promotion spots – so a crunch match in Bath’s promotion bid.
Rugby: Bath Rugby Union Club: The BB&W’s internationals were in action in the Six Nations competition over the weekend of the 10-11 February with Finn Russell’s Scotland denied a late try deemed not to have been grounded by the officials allowing France to win at Murrayfield by 16-20. Bath’s Cameran Redpath taking to the field after 30 minutes to bolster the Scots while the ‘magician’ Russell kept the scoreboard ticking over with his boot.
England edged Wales at Twickenham with Bath’s Sam Underhill and Well Stuart featured although subbed in the second half – in a match where Wales came close to victory only to see England’s George Ford kick England to victory winning 16-14.
It’s eyes down for the next home game in the Gallagher Premiership against Sale Sharks on Sunday 24th March when the BB&Ws will seek to grab maximum points and retain a healthy position in the league.
Team Bath Netball: Welsh international Bethan Dyke has been picked to skipper the team as they eye their first fixture. The 29-year-old, a veteran of five major international tournaments and going into her second season in the Blue & Gold, is joined in a new-look leadership group by fellow mid-courter Kirsty Harris and overseas defender Lisa Putt. The 2024 Netball Super League season begins on Saturday 17th February with an away game against Strathclyde Sirens at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham at 2.30pm. Last year the Blue and Golds edged the Caledonian outfit by a single point in a 49-49 victory. However, the return match saw the Scottish team cruise to a 69-47 win in May, 2023. The team need to get off to a strong start in the league – and they will be dressed the part with a new look kit – available also for their supporters. Their first home match is on Friday 1st March at 7.30pm. See the full fixture list below.
Team Bath Swimming: University of Bath sporting scholar Leah Crisp says she is “over the moon” after securing a Paris 2024 Olympic Games quota place for Team GB in marathon swimming. She finished 17th overall in the women’s 10km race at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha to earn Britain one of the 13 quota spots still available for this summer.
“I got to the last lap and thought, ‘everything I’ve got left, let’s use it and see what I can do’,” said Crisp, “I got a bit stuck around the second buoy on the last lap and lost a few places, so I just had to absolutely go for it down the final kilometre. It was quite stressful, really hard and everyone was just really gunning for it but I obviously managed to pull it back enough.”
Team GB’s Olympic swimming squad will be confirmed later in the year, with the women’s marathon swimming race taking place in the Seine River in central Paris on Saturday 8th August. Established in 1982, the Bears are in Division 1 of the Wiltshire County Cricket League (WCCL) on Saturdays, with a home ground at The Glasshouse Academy, Bradford Road, Combe Down, Bath; there’s also games in Division 7 Blue of the Somerset Monmouth League on Saturdays, home ground the Ken Willcox Ground, Peasedown St John, Bath; and friendlies against clubs based in Somerset/Wiltshire on Sundays; and T20 games against clubs based in Somerset/Wiltshire midweek; plus they participation in the Somerset Knock Out cup.

Modern Pentathlon: Team GB had an incredible performance at the home World Championships held at the University of Bath, with a seven-strong squad qualifying across the women’s and men’s finals.

The Blue, Black and Whites are in the Champions Cup pool stages in 2023/24. Taking place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the home of next year’s final, Sarra Elgan and Vincent Pochulu announced Bath Rugby’s fate for their European campaign. Being drawn in Pool 2, Bath Rugby will take on two French teams in the form of Top14 Champions, Stade Toulousain, along with Racing 92 and the URC’s Cardiff Rugby and Ulster Rugby. Bath Rugby have also drawn Harlequins, however under the Champions Cup’s new format, teams within the same league drawn into the same pool will not play each other.
Within the new format, the Champions Cup sees four pools of six teams, totalling 24 teams. The teams are split into two tiers; the four winning teams from the 2022/23 leagues (Munster, La Rochelle, Stade Toulousain and Saracens) make up Tier 1, with the remaining 20 qualifying teams placed into Tier 2. In a club first, the Blue, Black and White will take on Racing 92 who finished fifth in the Top14, giving new signing Finn Russell the chance to front up against his former French side.
Recent Top14 winners, Stade Toulousain, may also get the chance to visit The Rec, giving Bath a shot at redemption after a narrow 20-22 defeat the last time the French champions were in town in 2018.
Cardiff Rugby, who picked up the Welsh Shield for 2022/23, were handed a 38-3 hammering in 2016 and will look for retaliation come the pool stages.
Northern Ireland-based outfit Ulster Rugby, who were knocked out in this year’s URC 2022/23 quarter finals, complete Bath Rugby’s Pool fixtures for 2023/24.
