Bath Voice Sports News: Finn Russell injured as Exeter knock Bath out of the Investec Champions Cup; City win away; and the Larks have a ‘gutsy’ Cornish victory

Latest Sports News by Harry Mottram

Football: Bath City FC: It was the Ephraim Yeboah roadshow thanks to his stunning volley to rifle City in front of promotion rivals Hampton and Richmond Borough this week. The Romans came out 0-1 winners in the away fixture that has seen them leapfrog into the play-offs despite Cody missing a penalty in the opening minutes.

Football: Bath City Women FC: It was a different story for Bath’s female footballers who picked up three points with a sensational win over local rivals Frome when Mils Bellotti scored in the 90th minute from a free kick. The 3-2 win on Sunday saw City take an early lead on five minutes when Lilly Simmons netted and after the break Libby Goater doubled the lead. Frome pulled two goals back late on but it was Mils’ late, late show that settled the game propelling the women into third place in the South West Regional Women’s Football League behind Poole in top spot and Roya Wootton Bassett in second.

Football: Larkhall Athletic: The Larks gave a ‘gutsy’ performance at home against the Cornishmen of Mousehole AFC on Saturday with a 1-0 win leaving them just one point off the playoffs.

Odd Down AFC: The Down were in fine form winning 3-0 at home against bottom club Bishop Sutton on Saturday leaving them in mid table in the Toolstation League.

Rugby: Bath Rugby Union Club: A groin injury to Finn Russell in an away defeat to Exeter has given the Blue, Black and Whites cause for concern – while Sottish compatriot Cameron Redpath was also off in the second half with an ankle injury. The Rugby Gods were against Bath at Sandy Park with the wind causing problems with the high ball and Tom Dunn sent to the sin bin, plus Ted Hill hobbled off injured despite scoring a brilliant solo try – it was just not to be. And Bath took the game to the Chiefs for much of the first half going in at the break 7-12 up. A late fightback by Exeter overturned the BB&W’s advantage with a final score of Exeter 21 Bath 15 – and an exit from the Investec Champions Cup.

Finn Russell and company have a chance to do it all again at Sandy Park on 20th April – this time in the Gallagher Premiership.

Team Bath Netball: The Blue and Golds fell to defeat against the Leeds Rhinos on Friday 5th April in Bath University in front of a 1,300 crowd. Leeds took the spoils with a 51-67 win. However, there were positive words from Asha Francis, Team Bath Netball Head Coach, who said: “The second half was great and I do think today was a step forward in the sense that the game had already blown out but we didn’t allow that to go any further, which we would have done in previous games.

“The first half was error-ridden and again it was down to our decision making. We are a young side and you can see that lack of experience when the errors come in. It is frustrating but we’ve got to learn how to win and how to put those four quarters together.”

Looking ahead there is much talk about next season’s fully professional league in which Bath will hope to take part in. The fear for some clubs is the new Super League will not have relegation and promotion meaning it is a closed league. It is expected to be a franchise model with tenders put in by teams. Whether it remains related to Universities and rugby clubs is open to debate. If Bath fail to be in the new set up then gaining entry in the future will be problematic. Bath have just three points from one win this season and are second to bottom in the league.
