By News Editor Harry Mottram: Drone footage broadcast by the BBC shows the state of the Cleveland Lido after its 18-month closure following pollution from flooding (pictured).
Emma Grimshaw and Ross Pollard of BBC News, reported: “People have spoken of their “heartbreak” and “frustration” after the UK’s oldest lido fell into a “filthy” state after being closed for a year and a half.
“Bath’s Cleveland Pools Trust spent 20 years raising £9.3m to restore the Georgian lido and after several setbacks and millions of pounds of public money, it reopened in September 2023.”
They went on to report on various neighbours and residents decrying what they felt with view ranging from bitterness to it being a waste of money.
During the winter of 2023-24 flood water from the River Avon breached the defences installed and during its restoration. Dating to 1815 the lido was used through to the early 1980s when it became partly derelict and was no longer open to the public.
After a number of owners bought and sold it with the possibility it was to be demolished a campaign began and a charitable trust set up to raise the funds needed to restore it. For a few months the lido again became popular with the public.
The Trust said they are working on a solution and will give updates to the community while the National Lottery who helped to complete the fundraising to secure the restoration say they are working with the Trust to find a solution.
