Bath Voice News: underground explosion near the Guildhall uplifted pavement slabs with its force as engineers work to make area safe

By Harry Mottram: An underground explosion on Wednesday evening in Bath is connected to a fault in the electricity network near the Guildhall. National Grid have confirmed the incident took place and are working on repairs. The streets around High Street, Bridge Street, Orange Grove, Bog Island and North Parade were cordoned off for a time with a section of pavement by the Guildhall still out of bounds. Paving slabs on the pavement were dislodged in the explosion revealing its strength.

In a statement National Grid said: “As you may be aware, an underground explosion occurred in Bath city centre following a fault affecting our underground electricity network.

We understand that incidents like this can be concerning for the local community. We want to reassure you that our engineers have been on site, working closely with the emergency services and local partners to make the area safe.

“Our teams, alongside specialist contractors, are now carrying out excavations near the Guildhall to investigate the cause of the fault and complete the necessary repairs. This work will help us fully understand what happened and ensure the network remains safe and reliable.”
