By Harry Mottram. For years the former King Edward’s School building in Broad Street has been neglected but finally maybe some action is on the cards to renovate or update it as a hotel or something.
The empty building has been highlighted in the current issue of Private Eye magazine as subject to a potential action by the council in May. The issue will be discussed following the May 4th elections by the New Council.
Over the years the building has been left empty with concern over its long-term future. The pub chain Samuel Smith bought the Grade II listed building in 1989 and previously have put in planning applications for a change of use but nothing has happened. Founded in 1758 the brewer operates more than 100 pubs across the country.
The Grade II listed building built in 1754 and restored in 1978 the building was King Edward’s School until the school moved out of town to North Road in the 1980s and was bought by the brewery in 1989.
The future of the building is now to be discussed in May by the Council with a number of possibilities including compulsory purchase and a demand for the owners to develop the site.
