Bath Voice News: Theatre picks for September – from the romance of Brief Encounter to a lesbian love story plus My Fair Lady at the Theatre Royal

Mission Theatre
Tue 3-Sat 7 Sep. Brief Encounter. Adapted for the stage by Emma Rice Noël Coward’s drama of unrequited love is best known for David Lean’s movie version with Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. This adaption features songs and verse are by Noël Coward. A Next Stage production. 7.30pm.
Thu 12-Sun 15 Sep. The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken adapted by Russ Tunney. Set in England in 1832, in the imaginary reign of King James III, Bonnie and her orphaned cousin Sylvia are threatened by wicked wolves and a grim governess as they await the return of Bonnie’s parents from an ocean voyage.

Fri 13 Sep. Cat The Play. A dark comedy tale of Dave the cat’s backstage journey after his shock dismissal minutes before the opening night of the original production of Cats.
Thu 26 Sep. Chickpeas. Lesbian love story. By Georgia Casimir and Milly Mitchell. Presented by Hagseed Theatre.
Wed 2-Sat 5 Oct. Design For Living. Bath Drama stage Noel Coward’s drama about Otto, an artist, Leo, a playwright, and Gilda, an interior designer, as they grapple with their complicated three-way relationship. 7:30pm.

Tue 3-Sat 7 Sep. Art. A seemingly simple purchase of contemporary art – an all-white painting – ignites a hilarious debate amongst three close friends. What begins as a light-hearted discussion about art quickly descends into a riotous exploration of the blurred lines between art and reality.

Tue 10-Sat 14 Sep. My Fair Lady. Bath Light Operatic Group bring Alan Jay Lerner’s book and Frederick Loewe music to life with Henry Higgins and his friend Colonel Pickering who come across Eliza Doolittle, and turn her into a lady with comic results.

Sat 21-Sun 22 Sep. Little Red Riding Could. 11.30am & 3pm. A playful and mischievous retelling of the familiar fairy tale, with original songs and signature Roustabout silliness, that dares you to step off the path and write your own story.
Thu 26-Sun Oct. The Little Prince. Toby Thompson’s adaptation of the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s novel, as philosophical as its original, invites its audience to sense infinite possibility and recognise everything that is beautiful in the world. Performed by Toby Thompson, who brings this enchanting tale to life with his signature style. Various perf times.
