Dear Editor, Many look forward to retirement relishing the time to pursue their hobbies and spend more time with friends and family. Some can be fearful about how best to use their time and miss the routine and sociability that work provides. Others want to do something different for their own benefit and that of others. There are therefore many reasons why people choose to join the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP), part of the national charity Volunteering Matters.
Assisting class teachers by listening to children read on a one-to-one basis is one of the projects RSVP offers. Being able to read is a skill that most adults take for granted but for pupils it is a skill they need to acquire and practise. The approach of RSVP volunteers is to help pupils become fluent and confident readers, and to make reading fun so that pupils enjoy the experience and want to read more.
The commitment is usually no more than an hour or two a week and there is always flexibility.
You have skills to share across the generations and to make a difference in the lives of young Bathonians.
