Cop-turned-comedian Alfie returns with a brand-new show ahead of recording his BBC Radio 4 comedy It’s a Fair Cop. The audience are sworn in as cops before Alfie shares a real-life scenario from his own casebook. The Holburne will host a powerful and symbolic Cold Plunge Event in partnership with Ice Breakers and the ReBalance Bath Festival of Wellbeing. The event will then open to members of the public who wish to take a cold plunge on a Sunday morning.

Thu 5 Feb. Museum of Bath at Work. Talk on the Industrial Steam Railways of South Wales. The Bath Railway Society’s Peter Brabham will will explain the natural resources geography of the area and explore the diversity of industrial steam locomotives working in the coalfield and at other industrial sites using the photographs of the late John Wiltshire and Derek Chaplin covering the late 1950s to 1970s. The National Trust and Bath Assembly Rooms will be hosting their “Connection Cafes” at Burdall’s Yard whilst the latter go under major project work. Bath Assembly Rooms was built in 1771 as a place for social gatherings and making connections. The National Trust recently took back day-to-day management of the property and have a project underway to redevelop the building and create a new visitor experience based around its Georgian History. Thu 19-Sat 21 Feb. Bath Opera at The Roper Theatre, Haysfield School with Bizet’s Carmen. Passion, jealousy, and fate — a fully staged production of one of opera’s most passionate and dramatic tales. Set in sun-drenched Seville, Carmen tells the story of a free-spirited woman whose defiance and desire lead to love, jealousy, and tragedy. This vibrant new production features a talented cast of professional, emerging, and experienced singers, supported by Bath Opera’s accomplished chorus. The performance is conducted by Francis Faux and directed by Naomi Rose-Mock, with Bath Opera’s orchestra bringing Bizet’s unforgettable music to life. Sung in English with surtitles. Thu 19–Sat 21 Feb. Bach Festival. A celebration of J S Bach and his contemporaries. Various concerts. Bath Box Office for tickets. This year’s Bachfest performances trace several interlinking lines from the beginnings of the baroque to Gluck’s early classical works, with Bach at its core. Solomon’s Knot mark their first visit to Bath with a narrated performance of early English baroque masterpieces. The Italian and French baroque, so integral to Bach’s development, is represented by Corelli, Vivaldi, Couperin and Rameau. Some of Bach’s most famous creations will be heard, including his Goldberg Variations, Well-Tempered Clavier, cantatas and solo violin works. A specially formed ensemble of outstanding musicians will perform, before regular visitors The Sixteen and Harry Christophers bring the weekend to a close at Bath Abbey. Tue 24 Feb. Bath Abbey. United 4 Peace. A Ukrainian concert fundraiser by the Friends of Oleksandriya – Bath’s Ukrainian sister city. 7:30pm. The programme includes an original String Nonet by violinist Illia Bondarenko and audiovisual work “A Woman’s War” by composer Kornélia Nemcová and artist Natália Štojková. Illia Bondarenko and Kerenza Peacock will unite for the concert. Together with seven instrumentalists including violist Steven Doman, cellist Wallis Power, double bassist Roger McCann they will perform Bondarenko’s original String Nonet. Join us to discover Bondarenko’s beautiful instrumental composition and a new version of “A Woman’s War”, uniting with vocal trio The Ruffians, Bath’s Argyle String Orchestra, and a host of volunteer vocalists in the stunning setting of Bath Abbey. Enter a subterranean dreamscape to meet Dionysus – God of Wine, born once from his mother and again from Zeus; Orpheus who can only find love through separation; Eurydice and Persephone eternally bound to the land of the dead; and Aphrodite scattering the seeds of chaos through which we must wade to find sense. Ben Haggarty reads between the lines of Greek Mythology to restores them to their terrifying and truly awesome glory.

Mon 16 Feb. Salisbury Museum. Talk by Lord Burnett on role of the courts in modern Britain. The courts’ role in upholding constitutional law and human rights has never been more hotly debated. The Rt Hon. The Lord Burnett of Maldon, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales from 2017 to 2023, reflects on his years at the helm of the judiciary. During his tenure, he worked with six Lord Chancellors, guided the courts through the COVID-19 pandemic, and helped steer the justice system through times of unprecedented scrutiny. Lord Burnett will discuss the vital importance of public trust in the judiciary, exploring how it can be strengthened, and how it may be undermined by perceptions of bias, corruption, or political influence. 7pm.
