National Football: The 2026/27 season begins on Friday, August 21, 2026, with champions Arsenal taking on newly promoted Coventry City. The traditional opener to the season for the top flight is the Community Shield which this year sees Arsenal play Manchester City on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
The English Football League Championship kicks off over the weekend of August 14-16 – something of interest to those who follow Bristol City up the road – while in League 2 Bristol Rovers who used to play at Twerton Park kick off the same time – as do Swindon Town.
