Bath Voice News: industrial unrest in Bath continues with Junior Doctors staging walk-outs at the RUH

By Harry Mottram: Junior Doctors who are members of the British Medical Association trade union have taken industrial action with strikes this week that have affect Bath’s RUH. Dates for the strike action at Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14 and Saturday 16 June, 2023 with the times of 7am to tam in each case.

In a statement the hospital said: “If you have an appointment or procedure booked, please attend unless you hear from us. You do not need to call to check if your appointment is going ahead. We will be in touch with patients directly if we need to rearrange an appointment. Our emergency department remains open 24 hours a day, if you have a life-threatening emergency. Please be aware that, like others across the NHS, our Emergency Department is really busy. We continue to welcome family members and loved ones to visit patients. There are no changes to our visiting arrangements during industrial action so please continue to follow the visiting hours provided by the ward team.”

The British Medical Association (BMA) union, which represents doctors and medical students, are in dispute with the Government over pay and conditions and have rejected government offer of a 5% rise. Ministers said pay talks could only continue if the strike was called off however the MBA said the scale of their pay erosion in recent years was equivalent to a 26% cut over.

The BBC said that junior doctors make up around half of all hospital doctors in England and a quarter of all doctors working in GP surgeries. The BMA represents over 46,000 junior doctors in the UK.
