Young dancers will take over Bath city centre this weekend for a free open-air performance celebrating author Mary Shelley and her connection to the city.
Freak Out with Frankenstein, organised by Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein in partnership with Dorothy Coleborn Dance School and Bath Children’s Literature Festival, will take place on Saturday, October 3 near Bath Abbey and Stall Street.
Around 80 dancers aged 6 to 18 will perform two flashmob-style routines at 4pm and 5.30pm, with specially choreographed performances inspired by Shelley’s famous novel Frankenstein.
The event marks the significance of Bath in the author’s life. Shelley lived in the city in 1816 and worked on the novel that would become one of the most influential works of Gothic literature.
Vicki Smith, director of Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein, said: “Mary Shelley changed literary history while living in Bath, and we’re thrilled to celebrate her legacy in such a vibrant and accessible way.
“Freak Out with Frankenstein is all about bringing people together through creativity, performance and fun. We hope residents and visitors will join us to experience this unique spectacle in the heart of the city.”
Organisers say the performances will showcase the talents of local young people while celebrating Bath’s literary heritage and the enduring appeal of one of fiction’s most iconic characters.
The event forms part of the closing weekend of this year’s Bath Children’s Literature Festival and is free to attend.
