Bath tennis player Toby Samuel has earned his first call-up to the Great Britain Davis Cup squad after a breakthrough year on the international circuit.
The Team Bath Tennis player was selected for Britain’s tie against Ecuador at London’s Copper Box Arena on 19-20 September.
Samuel’s inclusion follows a remarkable run of form which has seen him break into the world’s top 100 for the first time. The 24-year-old is currently ranked 94th in the live ATP rankings after a summer that included appearances at the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.
His biggest achievement came at Flushing Meadows, where he reached the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time. After battling through three qualifying matches, he defeated former world number 20 Tomas Machac in straight sets before losing to 18th seed Jiri Lehecka in the second round.
The Davis Cup call-up caps a successful 12 months for Samuel, who has won five ATP Challenger titles and reached the semi-finals of the Lexus Eastbourne Open.
Samuel trains at the University of Bath as part of the Team Bath Tennis professional programme. He is coached by Ian MacDonald and Tiarnan Brady and has received support from the University’s UK Sport-accredited Elite Training Centre while competing around the world
He joins Arthur Fery, Cam Norrie, Henry Patten and Lloyd Glasspool in the five-player Great Britain squad.
